I must confess that I had a lot of fun listening to The Divine Baze Orchestra first
opus Once We Were Born… There is currently a wave of new retro sounding like prog/psychedelic
bands and DBO is among the best of them. They offer us on this CD a mix bag of old
Black Sabbath riffs, Deep Purple Jon Lord keys, Savoy Brown blues, even hints of
Led Zeppelin, but most of all Uriah Heep grounding. Nevertheless, don't get me wrong,
they are not wannabe, they produce very original and enjoyable stuff. In a sense,
it is a kind of time warp for the old chaps, but it is also more than that.
They spice up the brew, and it is very palatable. My only slight reservation is the vocal,
not always up to Ian Gillan standard, but however of sufficient quality to be considered correct.
“Dance” is a very « sabbatian» début that made me immediately smile; retro sounding, but still
original with many nice rhythm changes. “Choose Your Green” is wonderful, more psychedelic/ prog in
structure, more UH. I love it. “Trota di Mare” guitar and beat has acquaintance, in my mind,
with the Doors! “Orange and Turquoise” is more blues, another superb piece, with hints of early LZ.
“In search” is a very fun beat, it is an aspect that I like about their music, it captures the
energy and the spirit of creation that so often lack in many contemporary compositions
(that evidently is my very personal view). Like they say up here, they use good stuff…
“Little Man” returns to BS riffs, even the vocals point in that direction, interesting
guitar solo, and nevertheless it remains unique not a pale copy of the old rockers.
“The Person” is DP oriented, the beat, but also the organ. “The Man from my Mother's Brother”
offers many facets and shows well their versatility. “Closing the Circle” is the perfect example
of my slight reservation about the vocals. “Burned by the Sun” is probably the best and most inspired
track of this album; what a great guitar beginning! It is a wonderfully evolving piece.
I imagine them in show, and I think WOW! Consequently, I strongly recommend this CD for all lovers of
early hard rock, prog and psychedelic inspired music.
